NYC Gifts

Despite what feels like millions of stores in NYC, it can be harder than you think to bring back a unique NYC gift for friends and family. Most items you will find in Times Square are junk and many other items are hardly unique. Although they tend to be pricey, museum gift shops are one option.

Transit Museum Store
While on first impression you might not want to give someone subway themed gifts, this store has some really interesting products. For example, you can purchase subway cuff-links, tile reproductions from different subway stations, T-Shirts and much more. Plus, for NYC themed products they are not junky. The store has two locations; the one in Grand Central is the most convenient (closed until March 2010). You can also shop online. MoMA Store
The Museum of Modern Art has two stores to shop from. The "Design and Book Store" is within the building and features more museum themed items while the "Design Store" is across the street. The Design Store has some really unique products and is worth seeing even if you are not gift shopping. Most MoMA items are not NYC themed, and overpriced but you can find a few good gifts if you look hard. One bestseller is a ceramic NY Coffee Cup. Another unique gifts is the Hug Salt And Pepper Shakers. (11 W53rd St. between 5th & 6th Ave, Map)

The Guggenheim Museum is one of the top museums in the world. The building, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright is also one of the most famous and recognizable buildings. Therefore, it's a not a surprise that many of the museum gift shop's items feature the museum building. Therefore, most of the products are pretty unique. (1071 Fifth Ave., at 89th Street, Map)
